How to Clean Your Lawn Mower Safely

!±8± How to Clean Your Lawn Mower Safely

Even though lawn mowers are very sturdy machines, you will still need to do some general cleaning if you want to prolong its working life. And not only will the mower last longer, it will work more efficiently for you, which simply means you will have an easier time while mowing your lawn.

But you need to clean your mower properly if you want to do it safely. Remember, your mower has very sharp blades that can cause severe injuries, and engines or electrical parts that may short-circuit if water gets into the wrong compartments.

Thankfully, it's not that difficult to clean your mower at all. All you have to do is to follow these tips below...

The most important tip is to remember to cover the air filters first before you start any cleaning with water. If water gets into the engine, it will probably damage the mower permanently, so taking the precaution to cover up the air intake vents is of critical importance.

Then to save time, you can use your garden hose to spray water all around the mower and try to get rid of as much accumulated dirt and grime as you can. Pay special attention to the underside of the mower as that's where most of the grass clippings and dirt can be found. You will also want to ensure that the joints and moving parts are cleaned, like the areas around the wheels.

Sometimes the grass and dirt is stuck so tightly to the underside or to the frame that you can't even spray it clean with a water hose. In that case, you will have to get a scrapper to work it off slowly. Scrape off the dirt from the blades, but be careful to stay away from the sharp edges while you are doing so. The connecting shaft between the engine and the blades is an important part of the mower, so take extra time to make sure it is cleared of any accumulated weeds or twines that tend to wind themselves around this shaft.

If this shaft is not cleaned, you may find that the performance of the mower is affected. The blades may not spin as smoothly, or the speed may be slowed down dramatically. This is due to the friction on the shaft, so cleaning the shaft goes a long way to improve the performance and effectiveness of the mower.

When you are done with all the cleaning, leave the mower aside to dry up completely. Once you are sure that all moving parts are 100% dry, it's a good idea to lubricate the mower with a suitable lubricating oil. Again, this helps to prolong the life of the mechanical parts by reducing the wear and tear caused when they rub against each other during the operation of the mower.

That's it! Use the tips above and you can have a nice and clean mower in no time at all. And you can save on your maintenance costs as your mower will last longer and break down less often.

Information and Advice on Grass Trimmers

!±8± Information and Advice on Grass Trimmers

When looking for grass trimmers there are three main types to consider, these consist of petrol trimmers,
cordless trimmers, and electric cable trimmers.

The petrol trimmers can be of a heavy duty style, which means they will be more efficient at cutting through long heavy thick grass or weeds that need removing from your garden. One advantage they offer is that there is no need to run electrical extension cables around your garden for them to operate, this you would have to do with electric cable grass trimmers. This makes them more versatile in the operation of trimming your garden, however there are some downsides to the gas type of trimmers.

One of the downsides is the weight of the unit can be heavier than the electric type, this is due to the petrol engine required for it to operate and the tank to hold the fuel. Some other things you might like to consider before buying a petrol trimmer is they do produce noise when in operation, they also produce exhaust fumes which can be hazardous to your health if breathed in for periods of time, face mask, goggles, and ear defenders are highly recommended when using a petrol grass trimmer.

The electric cable type are slightly lighter to use when trimming your garden and do not produce as much noise in operation, they can be slightly cheaper to buy than the petrol type which makes them a popular choice for gardeners. There is an extra expense for you to consider with this type though, that is you will have to buy electric extension cables so that your machine will reach the length of your garden. These cables can sometimes cause a problem by getting in the way when you are cutting your grass or hedge and this should be a hazard to be aware of when using this type. There is an alternative to both these types of trimmer on the market today, these are called cordless grass trimmers they work of a battery that fastens round your waste or you can get one that has the power pack fitted to the machine.

The cordless type can be perfect if you have an average size garden that needs trimming, they are light and easy to operate anywhere around your garden with out cables or fumes to worry about. You can get around 30 minutes cutting time with certain models on one charge of the battery, in most cases it only takes around three to five hours to recharge the battery back up to full power. This amount of cutting time should be ample to go round the edge of your lawn and trim of the excess grass and get rid of those weeds. You should consider buying an extra battery for your trimmer when you purchase it, this permits you to charge one battery up while you are using the other one to cut your grass. This type have become very popular due to the ease of use and versatility around the garden, and at a minimal cost makes them appealing to all gardeners.

So when looking for a gardening tool to trim up your garden and create a beautiful looking lawn, check out the information online before you make your choice, there you will find all the information you need to make an informed decision on the type of grass trimmers best suited to your gardening needs.
